Pool lifts can help you experience fun you never thought you could.

No longer will being disabled, or confined to a wheelchair prevent you from the fun and relaxation of taking a dip into a cool pool on a hot summer day. A pool lift is the best tool for helping those with limited access enjoy this activity that was once impossible and dangerous for them. Pool lifts come in many varieties, and many can be custom built to the user's particular needs. Pool lifts and spa lifts that are used in public swimming areas must comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), so that they are self-operable and require little or no outside assistance.

How do pool lifts work?

Pool lifts and spa lifts are quite similar to the overhead patient lifts used in hospitals and by caretakers. Instead of being hung from a ceiling, pool lifts are typically attached or anchored on or near the poolside. The lift is similar to a crane in that it can lift the user from the wheelchair into the lift, and rotates until it is over the pool, and can lower into the water. There are exceptions to this design, such as Liko lifts, which act more like an overhead patient lift due to relying on a sliding rail design, rather than rotating. Pool and spa lifts designed like overhead patient lifts can be advantageous because they allow the user to move through the water, and are typically used for physical therapy. Pool lifts are powered in many ways. Battery-powered lifts, which are rechargeable, are the most common in public use, due to their ease of use. Hydraulic lifts are inexpensive, but require someone to do the pumping. Water-powered pool and spa lifts are the safest and are also inexpensive, but require adequate water pressure for operation.

What kind of pool lift is right for me?

Selecting the right pool lift depends on many factors. The type of pool and how the pool lift will be used are among those factors. Typically, there are pool lifts designed specifically for in-ground pools, above ground pools, and spas respectively, however there are some lifts designed for all three types. You can have the pool or spa lifts permanently installed by a professional, but keep in mind that your lift will have to be in place year-round. Another type of pool lift can be removed by lifting the pole off the anchor, however these can be heavy. Portable lifts, the most expensive option, can be transported to the poolside and lock the wheels for operation.
